Physical Characteristics. Gadsden County is in northwest Florida and is bordered by Georgia and by Jackson, Liberty, and Leon counties. The county has 517.60 square miles of land and 10.70 square miles of water for a total of 528.30 square miles. The average January temperature is 53.7 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average August temperature is 80.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual rainfall is 56.02 inches.
History. Gadsden County was established in 1823 and named for James Gadsden (1788-1858), native of South Carolina and aide-de-camp to Andrew Jackson during his 1818 campaign in Florida. The county was settled by slave owners from other southern states and became famous for its tobacco.
